Soaring to New Heights

Leading Ladies® Reception
Honoring Exceptional Women

Host:Ridgely Retreat

Sponsor: BankAnnapolis

Guest Speaker: Riva Tara Wine
Creative * Courageous * Compassionate * Unconventional

From South Africa to the United States, Riva Wine has made a profound difference through her life’s work. Her courage and determination led her beyond boundaries that would have halted many a valiant effort. She dared to travel into uncharted territory to affect change and through her efforts has left a lasting impression on many people.

Her life’s work spans the traditional to the untraditional. From her first job in fashion design and garment manufacturing to jewelry design to interior design to feng shui to human development, Riva has followed a circuitous path which is indicative of her personality: open minded, creative, courageous and compassionate. Her current work involves coaching, speaking, and training workshops. In this work, Riva implements a lot of Eastern philosophy to help people tap their inner core, creativity and power to develop their greatest potential. Additionally, she addresses the issue of stress management and how to effectively deal with stress so that we may live calmer, more productive lives.

Throughout her life and various career interests, Riva has always found opportunities to powerfully impact people. While managing the garment factory at the age of 17, she learned that many of her staff members were uneducated. So, she decided to start a day school for the children. This, however, was not an easy task. As a white woman living in the ear of Apartheid, Riva was not allowed to travel to the African communities on the weekends where most of her staff lived. She was only allowed to travel there during the week which made it difficult to meet with the parents. However, determined to help provide education for these children, Riva forge forward beyond the boundaries and engaged many of her friends who were teachers to train others to educate these children. Within approximately two years, Riva had successfully established a day school.

This is just one of many stories where Riva found an opportunity to make a difference despite the challenges that confronted her. The recurring theme throughout her life is finding courage to do something you believe in, even when it seems impossible. And she uses the power of creativity to transform negative life experiences into positive learning opportunities.

Riva Wine is an inspiring woman, who reaches beyond the ordinary and expected. The life of Riva Wine is intriguing, fascinating, liberating, and empowering. Her presentation at our event will leave a lasting impression on you and encourage you to “Soar to New Heights” both personally and professionally!

Boston Leading Ladies® Event
"We Are Our Father's Daughters."

Guest Speaker:  Myra Kraft
President and Director, New England Patriots Charitable Foundation
Trustee, The Robert K. and Myra H. Kraft Foundation

** A catalyst for change in the way we think, act, work and live. **

Myra Kraft is a remarkable woman who is profoundly impacting countless lives through her leadership and extraordinary philanthropic efforts. Born into a home full of strong values, Myra learned at an early age the importance of family, faith and community. Her late father, Jacob Hiatt, was one of Boston’s most well respected philanthropists. Through his extensive contributions to education, health care, art and culture, Jacob Hiatt left a lasting impression on his daughter. Instilled with compassion, appreciation and respect for others, Myra Kraft is truly her "Father’s Daughter".

President and Director of the New England Patriots Charitable Foundation and Trustee of The Robert K. and Myra H. Kraft Foundation, Myra’s philanthropic work extends far beyond the city limits of Boston. In a position that is usually co-chaired, she served as the sole National Chair of the United Jewish Communities General Assembly 2000. This was a major project that brought 6,000 adults and students to Israel from the United States, Canada and other parts of the world.

Currently, Myra Kraft is a member of the Board of Directors for the following organizations: United Way of Massachusetts Bay; American Repertory Theatre; Facing History & Ourselves (an organization which educates against prejudice); and American Joint Distribution Committee. She is also the Vice Chair, Board of Trustees for Brandeis University (her alma mater) and is a member of the Executive Committee and Chair of the Overseas Committee for Combined Jewish Philanthropies. Additionally, Myra was the first woman chair of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston and served as the Chairwoman from 1996 to 2002.

Although Myra Kraft and her husband, Robert Kraft (owner of the New England Patriots), have a strong connection and commitment to the Jewish community, they are making unprecedented strides to promote mutual understanding between Christians and Jews. A dynamic team, Myra and Robert Kraft funded an endowed professorship for a Christian scholar at the Boston College Center for Christian-Jewish Learning with a $2 million gift. Additionally, Myra and Robert Kraft collaborated with Myra’s father, Jacob Hiatt, to establish The Kraft-Hiatt Fund. Endowed through gifts to Holy Cross and Brandeis University, this fund was created to encourage greater understanding between Christians and Jews.

Myra’s tremendous leadership and tireless efforts to strengthen our community, pay tribute not only to this leading lady herself, but also to the profound role her father played in her life. Truly, Myra Kraft is her father’s daughter. As more women leaders are cultivated, it is essential to have both strong female and male role models. Myra is setting the example of a great leader. Courageous. Compassionate. Understanding. Accepting.

Leading Ladies® are catalysts for change in the way we think, act, work and live. Clearly, Myra Kraft is a Leading Lady who leads by her example.

Leading Ladies® Special Event
"A Beacon of Hope"

OUR SPEAKER: Marjorie Agosin, "A Beacon of Hope"

"To change one person, is to change the world." Marjorie Agosin

Marjorie Agosin is "A Beacon of Hope" for all of us. A descendant of European Jews who fled the Holocaust and found refuge in Chile, Marjorie’s unique heritage, as a young, Jewish girl raised in Chile, has played an integral role in her life works. An internationally renown human rights activist, poet, author, and professor of Spanish at Wellesley College, Marjorie is breaking down barriers, dispelling stereotypes and shedding light on the richness of our individual heritage.

Recognized in both North and South America as one of the most versatile and provocative Latin American writers, she has received several of the most prestigious awards, some of which include: The Gabriela Mistral Medal of Honor for Lifetime Achievement, Granted by the Chilean Government; and the Letras de Oro award and the Latino Literature Prize in 1995 for two collections of poetry. One example of her many powerful writings is her book, Scraps of Life: Chilean Arpilleras (Red Sea Press, 1987,translated by Cola Franzen), which tells of Chilean women who make their struggles known to the world through the exposition of "arpilleras," folk tapestries which tell of bravery and hardships in the face of oppression. Marjorie’s concern for women in Chile has also been the focus feature articles in The New York Times, The Christian Science Monitor, Ms. Magazine, and the Barnard Occasional Papers on Women’s Issues.

Marjorie’s writings also address the topic of the Jewish experience in Latin America. One of her most recent books is A Cross and A Star: Memoirs of A Jewish Girl in Chile (University of New Mexico Press, 1995). This innovative work details her mother’s childhood as a Jewish immigrant in a German community in Chile before, during and after World War II. In recognition of her deep social concerns and accomplishments, Majorie received the Good Neighbor Award in 1988 given by the Conference of Christians and Jews. She was also honored with the United Nations Leadership Award for Human Rights and received The Henrietta Zolds Award in 2001 and 2002 from the New England chapter of Hadassah.

Clearly, Marjorie Agosin is a Leading Lady who leads by example. She willing shares her personal life experiences to give us courage and hope in the pursuit of our own life purpose, despite the many hardships life can present. Marjorie Agosin is an inspiration for all of us! For a listing of her books, please visit: http://www.amazon.com.

Meet some exceptional Boston Leading Ladies®!

Be Inspired by our Guest Speaker: Donna Dodson
*Artist ~ Sculptor ~ Entrepreneur *

Donna is an extraordinary woman who has left all conventional career paths to follow her life’s passion as a Sculptor. It requires courage, determination and self-belief to succeed as an entrepreneur, particularly as a woman in the art world, and Donna is doing just that – succeeding! Not only will she share with us how she took the “leap of faith” to start her own business and pursue a “non-traditional” career, but also how her artwork has evolved from junkyard art to wood carvings to pop culture pieces made from shells.

Several of Donna’s original artworks will be exhibited at the event. In her presentation, she will discuss a few of her pieces. It is truly fascinating to view artwork through the artist’s eye.

This event is a real treat with appeal to many different interests! You won’t want to miss it!
